CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Dr. Varun Malhotra of AIIMS Bhopal Presents Scientific Insights on Yoga and Meditation at APPICON 2024

Under the guidance of Executive Director Ajay Singh, Dr. Varun Malhotra, Additional Professor of Physiology at AIIMS Bhopal, made a notable presentation on “Stress, Strength, and Science: Psychoneuroimmunomodulation through Yoga and Meditation” during a symposium at APPICON 2024. The conference was hosted by ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Chennai.

Dr. Malhotra’s presentation, titled “Quantifying the Physiological Impact of Yoga and Meditation: A Scientific Approach,” emphasized the use of advanced tools like Dynamika/NeuralCheck mobile HRV units for analyzing heart rate variability (HRV) and stress indices during various yoga techniques, including Kriya Yoga and Kapalabhati. Supported by EEG studies, he highlighted that while Kapalabhati activates the sympathetic nervous system, it is unsuitable for individuals with hypertension. In contrast, slow, deep breathing techniques activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reduce stress, and promote longevity.

Executive Director Ajay Singh remarked, “Yoga and meditation are ancient practices that hold profound importance in modern healthcare. This symposium bridges the gap between tradition and science, providing evidence-based perspectives on their transformative potential.”

The discussions emphasized the therapeutic applications of yoga and meditation, the necessity of scientific validation, and adherence to safety protocols to minimize risks.

The symposium featured esteemed experts, including:

Professor Ramji Singh, Executive Director, AIIMS Kalyani

Prafulla K., Associate Professor, Physiology, AIIMS Bibinagar

Prof. T.N. Raju, Zoology Department, Osmania University

Kaviraj Udupa, Clinical Neurophysiologist, NIMHANS

Prominent researchers such as Rajkumar Yadav, Professor, AIIMS New Delhi; Rajathi R., Assistant Professor, AIIMS Bathinda; and Suprabha Sharma, Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, also presented their findings, exploring the connections between yoga, stress management, and physical health.
