The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) showcased India’s indigenous semiconductor technology and next-generation chip development capabilities. At the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026, held from October 27 to 29 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, DRDO led a special session on semiconductors and next-generation chips. Scientists, industry experts, academicians and policymakers discussed emerging technologies and India’s technological self-reliance at the conclave.
The session, chaired by DRDO Director General, Electronics and Communication Systems, Dr B.K. Das, discussed the development of artificial intelligence-based system-on-chips, silicon edge intelligence and advanced microprocessor technology. The discussion also stressed supporting industries and startups in developing next-generation chip designs and indigenous technology solutions.
DRDO’s Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL), Delhi, displayed Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) and Infrared Focal Plane Arrays (IRFPAs), key technologies for radar and missile systems. Gallium arsenide and gallium nitride-based MMICs and multi-chip modules have been used in several strategic missions. These technologies are critical components of modern radar and electronic warfare systems.
IRFPA technology helps in target identification and tracking target movement in tactical missiles. It includes short-wave, mid-wave and long-wave infrared technologies. DRDO also displayed scramjet engine technology, a neuromorphic accelerator, a quantum random number generator, photonic integrated circuits and a laser proximity sensor as part of its presentation of quantum and future technologies. According to the organisation, developing indigenous capability in chip design, fabrication, testing and production in the semiconductor sector is important for national security, digital sovereignty and economic strength. The conclave also emphasised increasing collaboration among research institutions, industry and startups to make India competitive in the global semiconductor sector.
