CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Election Commission has taken a major step for eligible people whose names were left out of the voter list during the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, and for young people voting for the first time. The Commission has directed that a special campaign be conducted in 20 states and Union Territories where the SIR process has been completed to add the names of such voters.

According to the Commission’s directions, people whose names could not be included in the voter list during or after the SIR will be able to apply to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer under the continuous updation process. New eligible voters will also be able to register their names through the standard Form-6. In states where SIR has been completed, the additional declaration linked to Form-6 has also been removed.

The Election Commission has asked Chief Electoral Officers, District Election Officers and Electoral Registration Officers to begin the special campaign immediately. Officials have also been directed to compare the voter lists from before and after the SIR and identify eligible people whose names are not registered elsewhere and who are not deceased or duplicate voters. Such people will be contacted and assisted in filling Form-6.

The issue of around 2.07 crore fewer names during the SIR in Maharashtra has also been discussed. However, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer has clarified that this figure relates to the reduction in the draft voter list and should not be seen as names permanently deleted. The Commission has also extended the deadline for claims and objections in Maharashtra to October 12, 2026, while the period for disposal of notices and claims has been fixed until November 10.
