CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Durga Prasai, a leader who spearheaded the pro-monarchy movement in Nepal, has been arrested from Assam, India. Nepal Police, with assistance from police in Guwahati—the capital of Assam—took Prasai into custody on Thursday evening. He was brought under heavy security to the Nepal border the same night and then flown to Kathmandu.
According to the police, Prasai led the protest held on March 28 in support of restoring the monarchy in Kathmandu. He is accused of inciting violence during the demonstration, including vandalism, arson, looting, and attempted murder. Following the unrest, Prasai reportedly fled the country, fearing arrest. Suspecting he was hiding in India, Nepalese authorities coordinated with Indian police, leading to his arrest in Guwahati. He was brought through Siliguri to the Kakadbhitta border crossing in Nepal.
DIG Siddhi Bikram Shah of the Nepal Police Special Bureau confirmed that Prasai was formally taken into custody under tight security at the Kakadbhitta border. From there, he was flown from Bhadrapur in Jhapa district to Kathmandu. After interrogation at the Special Bureau headquarters, Prasai will be presented in Kathmandu District Court, where police will request his remand.
