CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Delhi University Students’ Union, or DUSU, elections are not limited to the four posts in the university. Several leaders associated with student politics have gone on to hold important positions in Delhi and national politics. Voting for the DU Students’ Union election is being held on September 18, 2026, with more than 1.4 lakh students choosing their representatives.

Arun Jaitley was among the prominent leaders who moved from DUSU to national politics. He won the DUSU president’s election in 1974 on an ABVP ticket. He later held several key positions in the Union government, including finance minister and defence minister.

Ajay Maken won the DUSU president’s election in 1985 as an NSUI candidate. He later served as a minister in the Delhi government and as Union minister for sports and youth affairs, and housing and urban poverty alleviation.

Vijay Goel became DUSU president in 1977-78. He later served as a Lok Sabha MP and held a ministerial post in the Union government.

Alka Lamba was elected DUSU president from NSUI in 1995. She later became a member of the Delhi Assembly and is currently the national president of the Mahila Congress.

Rekha Gupta was elected DUSU president in 1996-97. Moving ahead from student politics, she became the Chief Minister of Delhi.

Apart from these leaders, several names such as Vijay Jolly, Sudhanshu Mittal, Nupur Sharma, Ragini Nayak, Amrita Dhawan and Subhash Chopra also emerged from DUSU student politics. The history of DUSU shows that university student politics has provided a platform for leaders associated with different political parties and ideologies to move forward in public life.
