CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbai. The 15 finalists of the ‘I Can Earthshot Challenge’, organised with the aim of finding solutions to challenges linked to environmental protection and climate change, have been announced. The Earthshot Prize has declared the finalists of this initiative in collaboration with Brazilian organisation Alana and the global youth movement Design for Change. Student teams from nine states of India and Delhi have been selected. These teams will take part in the special programme ‘Children’s Earthshot’, to be held in Mumbai in November.
According to the organisers, the initiative is the largest youth participation programme in the history of The Earthshot Prize. Through it, an effort was made to reach nearly one million students in more than 15,000 schools across 24 states of the country. The challenge encouraged children aged 9 to 17 to identify environmental problems around them and develop practical solutions.
Students worked on issues such as air pollution, water conservation, cleanliness of rivers, waste management, food wastage and climate change. In the selection process, importance was given to understanding local problems, creativity, the practicality of implementing the solution and its impact on the community. The selected teams’ projects focus on five key areas: protecting nature, cleaning rivers and water sources, reducing air pollution, building a waste-free world and addressing climate change.
Students presented solutions such as systems to channel rainwater into the ground, low-cost air filters, initiatives to collect paper for recycling, biodegradable diyas to reduce river pollution, and low-cost devices to keep vegetables safe in the heat. These projects show that students are making practical efforts to solve problems present in their schools and communities.
During a two-day programme to be held in November at the Museum of Solutions in Mumbai, the finalists will present their projects and receive guidance from experts. At the awards ceremony on November 17, one winning team will be announced in each of the five categories. Each winning team will receive support of US$2,000 to further develop and implement its environmental solution.
The aim of this initiative is not only to make children aware of environmental problems, but also to encourage them to develop solutions and bring positive change in their communities.
