CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has allotted separate party names and election symbols to the two rival factions of the Trinamool Congress ahead of the West Bengal Assembly bypolls scheduled for October 6. The decision follows the Commission’s interim order freezing the use of the original “All India Trinamool Congress” name and its reserved “Flowers and Grass” symbol by both groups.
The faction led by Mamata Banerjee has been allotted the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” and the “Football Player” symbol. The rival faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has been allotted the name “Democratic Trinamool Congress” and the “Envelope” symbol.
The ECI’s interim arrangement applies to the upcoming bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar. The Commission had asked both groups to submit alternative names and free symbols after determining that competing claims over the original party identity required substantive adjudication under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968.
The allocation does not constitute a final decision on which faction is entitled to the original party name and symbol. The substantive dispute remains pending before the Election Commission.
The development comes amid an ongoing organisational dispute between the two groups and will shape their identities on the ballot for the October 6 bypolls.
