CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Would you like to celebrate a spiritually enriching and responsible Holi?

Holi is a festival that symbolizes the divine love of Radha-Krishna, the triumph of good over evil through Holika Dahan, and the arrival of spring. Let’s ensure our celebrations are safe, eco-friendly, and inclusive for everyone!

  1. Use Natural and Eco-Friendly Colors

In ancient times, Holi colors were made from natural elements like turmeric, kumkum, sandalwood, and flower extracts, offering Ayurvedic benefits. Today, many synthetic colors contain harmful chemicals. Opt for herbal, organic, or homemade colors to keep the festival safe and nature-friendly.

  1. Begin Holi with Devotion

Start the day by worshipping Lord Krishna and Radha, seeking blessings for happiness and prosperity. Singing Holi bhajans and chanting the Hare Krishna mantra can infuse spiritual energy into the celebrations.

  1. Protect Your Skin and Hair

Apply coconut oil, mustard oil, or aloe vera gel to your skin before playing Holi. These Ayurvedic practices protect against harmful substances. Wear full-sleeved clothing and cover your head with a scarf to minimize color exposure.

  1. Limit Water Usage

Sanatan Dharma considers nature sacred, and water is revered as a divine element. Avoid wasting water during Holi. Instead, use dry colors made from flowers and herbs. If using water, ensure it does not harm the environment or cause inconvenience to others.

  1. Respect Personal Boundaries

Holi should be celebrated with mutual respect and joy. Just as Lord Krishna playfully applied colors to Radha with consent, we too must respect others’ boundaries. Avoid forcefully applying colors, especially towards women, children, and the elderly.

  1. Choose Sattvic Food and Beverages

Traditional Holi delicacies like gujiya, kheer, and panchamrit are an integral part of the festival. Ensure the food is prepared hygienically and follows a sattvic (pure) diet. Avoid excessive consumption of intoxicants like bhang, as they may harm mental and physical health.

  1. Protect Your Eyes and Ears

Many synthetic colors contain harmful chemicals that cause irritation. If colors enter the eyes, wash immediately with clean water and avoid rubbing. Excessive noise can disturb elderly individuals, young children, and animals, so keep sound levels moderate.

  1. Show Compassion Towards Animals

Sanatan Dharma teaches non-violence (ahimsa) towards all beings. Many animals suffer from toxic colors and loud noises during Holi. Do not throw colors or water on animals, and keep pets indoors for their safety.

  1. Maintain Cleanliness

Holi is a festival of purity and joy. After celebrations, clean your surroundings and encourage others to do the same. Dispose of color packets and waste responsibly to respect nature.

  1. Celebrate an Inclusive Holi

Holi is a festival of unity, and it should include people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Organize community events where even individuals with disabilities can participate comfortably.
