A controversy surrounding a private visit by a Hindu religious delegation to Paris’s Eiffel Tower has triggered a wider debate over gender equality, religious practices and the role of women in public spaces. The controversy erupted after Eiffel Tower staff alleged that female employees were asked to leave their workstations or avoid certain areas during a visit by a delegation associated with the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). The tower’s operating company, SETE, acknowledged that the delegation had requested arrangements limiting interactions with women and said such conditions should not have been accepted.
The incident led Eiffel Tower employees to stage a walkout, temporarily closing the iconic landmark. Paris authorities announced an investigation, while French political leaders strongly emphasized the importance of gender equality. BAPS later expressed regret for any pain or inconvenience caused and said the visit had been arranged to avoid disruption because of the size of the delegation.
Against this backdrop, Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke criticized the idea of allowing what he described as “regressive” interpretations of religion to influence public life. His remarks have added another dimension to the ongoing debate over religious freedom, women’s rights and equality.
