CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Demands related to the pay, pension and allowances of central government employees and pensioners were discussed during meetings of the Eighth Central Pay Commission held in Chennai on September 7 and 8.
According to official information from the commission, suggestions were received from employee organisations and other stakeholders during the Chennai visit. A key demand raised at the meeting was to increase the minimum basic pay to around ₹68,000 to ₹69,000. Under the current Seventh Pay Commission, the minimum basic pay is ₹18,000. Employee organisations sought a major increase, citing inflation and rising family expenses. However, the ₹68,000 or ₹69,000 figure has not been decided by the commission and remains a demand from employee organisations.
Other suggestions included raising the current annual increment rate from 3 percent to 6 to 7 percent, creating a permanent mechanism for pay revision, and introducing a running scale in place of the existing pay matrix. Some organisations also demanded restoration of the old pension scheme and improvements in pension.
Other demands of employees and pensioners will also be considered in the next important meetings of the Eighth Pay Commission. The commission’s report and the final pay structure have not yet been finalised.
