CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal / Mumbai : Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde took a symbolic test drive in a Tesla Model Y outside Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai on Wednesday, just a day after the electric vehicle giant opened its first showroom in India at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Accompanied by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, the test drive attracted significant public and media attention, reflecting strong political support for India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution.
Shinde called it a “milestone moment” for Maharashtra, highlighting the state’s readiness to welcome EV investments. “We invite Tesla to set up manufacturing and R&D units in Maharashtra,” he said. The event signaled the government’s commitment to sustainable mobility and green energy.
The Tesla showroom at BKC marks the American automaker’s official entry into the Indian market. Alongside the Model Y unveiling, the company also announced the launch of four fast-charging stations in Mumbai. These superchargers can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the showroom and urged Tesla to be part of the ‘Make in Maharashtra’ initiative. Business tycoon Anand Mahindra also welcomed Tesla’s move on social media, calling it a “transformative step” for India’s EV landscape.
This launch reinforces Tesla’s intent to deepen its presence in India and aligns with the country’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions and adopting clean transportation solutions. With Maharashtra at the forefront, India is gearing up for a major shift toward electric mobility.
