CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Sagar: El Nino may keep Delhi winter warmer, pollution risk remains
New Delhi. Delhi may experience a warmer-than-normal winter this time, but this is not expected to bring relief from air pollution. Research and expert assessments on weather conditions and the possible impact of El Nino have heightened concerns over the pollution challenge in the capital during winter. According to experts, if rainfall activity remains weak in winter and wind speeds are low, pollutants may remain accumulated in the atmosphere for longer periods.
El Nino is a change in sea surface temperatures and atmospheric conditions in the tropical region of the Pacific Ocean, affecting weather in many parts of the world. According to the India Meteorological Department, El Nino is likely to strengthen further during October-December of 2026. However, its actual impact on regional weather will also depend on other oceanic and atmospheric conditions.
Weather experts believe western disturbances may weaken under the influence of El Nino. These disturbances bring rainfall to north India during winter. Rain and strong winds help remove pollutant particles from the atmosphere and aid their dispersion. If these remain weak, pollution levels in Delhi-NCR may rise.
A study has found that about 70% of the year-to-year variation in PM2.5 pollution during winter in north India is linked to western disturbance activity. According to the study, pollution may become more severe in winters with low rainfall.
Therefore, a warmer-than-normal winter does not mean clean air. Along with temperature, wind speed, rainfall, incidents of stubble burning and local emissions will also play an important role in determining Delhi’s air quality.
