CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: New Delhi. Amid the continuing controversy over the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the Election Commission has extended the timeline for the process in six states and the Union Territory of Delhi. The Commission has issued a revised schedule for Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Nagaland. The decision will give voters additional time to get their names added, correct details and file objections.
In Delhi, claims and objections can now be filed until November 25. The last date for filing claims and objections has been extended from October 30 to November 25. The process of issuing notices on these claims and disposing of them will now continue until December 15. Earlier, the deadline for this was November 30. Delhi’s final electoral roll will now be published on December 22.
In Maharashtra, the deadline for filing claims and objections has been extended from October 26 to November 13. The process of disposing of them will continue until November 25. The state’s final electoral roll will be released on November 30.
The schedule has also been changed in four other states. In Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, the last date for disposal of claims and objections has been set as November 20. In Nagaland, this process will continue until November 25, and in Telangana until November 26. The final electoral rolls of these four states, along with Maharashtra, will be published on November 30.
The decision to extend the important timeline came a day after the Supreme Court’s observation in which the court had asked for reconsideration of the deadline fixed for inclusion of names during the voter list revision in Delhi. The court had stressed accepting applications from eligible voters and continuing verification of the necessary documents.
Opposition parties have expressed apprehension over the SIR process, saying that a hurried revision could result in the names of eligible voters being left out of the list. The Election Commission, meanwhile, has said the revised schedule should be widely publicised so that eligible voters get an opportunity to have their names added or their details corrected.
