CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The use of electric vehicles in India will no longer be limited only to travel. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and the Kerala State Electricity Board have begun work on a technology through which electric vehicles will be able to supply power to the electricity grid when required. The technology is called vehicle-to-grid, or V2G. Its objective is to provide additional support to the grid when electricity demand rises and to make energy management more effective.

Under this technology, an electric vehicle battery is not only charged with electricity; with the help of a suitable bidirectional charger and control system, the electricity stored in the battery can also be sent back to a home or to the power grid. This could help manage high electricity demand in the evening, improve the use of solar energy and increase the stability of power supply. IIT Bombay’s Grid Integration Lab has worked on technical testing and pilot projects in this direction.

An agreement was signed between IIT Bombay and the Kerala State Electricity Board in July 2025 to implement the project in Kerala. Under this, the practicality of the technology, its impact on the electricity grid and the possible economic benefits for consumers are being studied. However, the claim of a 30 percent reduction in electricity bills cannot be treated as a certified general outcome for every consumer. Actual savings will depend on the vehicle battery, charging arrangement, electricity tariffs and usage pattern.

According to experts, V2G technology could make electric vehicles an active part of the energy system in the future. Its wider use will require suitable charging infrastructure, technical standards and economic incentives.
