CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC), dedicated to the care of Bhopal gas victims and excellence in research, has now taken a significant step toward green energy. With a focus on environmental protection and energy efficiency, rooftop solar power plants are being installed at BMHRC, which will be capable of meeting more than 20 percent of the institution’s total electricity needs on their own.
This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision of a “self-reliant India in the energy sector” and the commitment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project is being implemented under the directives of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), which is guiding all its institutes towards renewable energy adoption. The solar plants at BMHRC are being installed by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN). Under this plan, the institute bears no financial liability — it is completely free of charge.
Solar panels are being installed on the rooftops of BMHRC’s main building, auditorium, doctors’ hostel, nursing hostel, and other structures. The installation covers approximately 4,500 square meters. It is estimated that these solar power plants will generate about 2,200 units of electricity daily, while the hospital’s daily electricity consumption is around 10,000 units. This plan will not only help save energy but also reduce environmental impact by using pollution-free and sustainable energy.
Manisha Srivastava, Director-in-charge of BMHRC, said, “This initiative reflects the hospital’s environmental responsibility. We are committed not only to providing quality healthcare services to patients but also to paving the way for sustainable development for future generations through the use of clean energy.”
Work on the project has already begun, and it is expected that the rooftop solar system will be fully operational by the end of this month. This project will address climate change challenges while sustainably fulfilling the institution’s long-term energy needs.
