CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal / Raigarh : Tragedy struck Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district early Wednesday as a wild elephant and its calf trampled three people to death, including a three-year-old child, in two separate incidents. The fatal attacks took place in the Lailunga forest range under the Dharamjaigarh forest division, sparking panic among villagers and triggering a large-scale search operation.
According to forest officials, the first incident occurred around 2 a.m. in Gosadih village when the elephants entered a residential area. Among the victims was a toddler, Satyam Rawat, who was sleeping outside his hut. His parents, who were momentarily inside the hut, returned to discover the horrific scene.
Soon after, the elephants moved to a nearby village where they reportedly trampled two more residents to death. The names of the other victims have not yet been released.
District forest officers confirmed that specialized tracking teams have been deployed to trace and drive the elephants back into the forest. “Our primary concern is to ensure the safety of residents and prevent further casualties,” a senior forest official said.
The forest department has urged villagers in the surrounding areas to remain indoors at night and report any elephant movement immediately. Compensation for the deceased victims’ families is also being arranged as per government provisions.
This incident adds to the growing conflict between humans and wildlife in forest fringe areas, raising questions about habitat loss and the need for more effective elephant corridors and early warning systems.
