Roads whose width was fixed at 120 feet in the master plan have shrunk to about 80 feet because of encroachments. More than 50 notices have been issued to take forward the road-widening process, but despite this, the expected progress in action and construction has not been achieved.
According to the master plan, the purpose of wider roads is to make traffic movement in the city smoother and to develop infrastructure in line with future needs. However, because of encroachments along roadsides, achieving the prescribed width is becoming difficult. At several places, the reduced available road space affects the movement of vehicles.
Despite notices being issued to encroachers by the department concerned, the road-widening work remains stuck. Even after the notices were issued, the failure to remove encroachments has delayed implementation of the plan on the ground. This is affecting the road network proposed in the master plan and the city’s development plans.
For road widening, it is necessary to remove encroachments and make the designated land available. The challenge now is how further action is completed after the notices, so that the proposed roads can achieve their fixed width and the city’s traffic system can improve.
