A startling case of cyber fraud has come to light in Darbhanga, Bihar. An alleged young woman befriended an engineer working in a private company on social media and, after assuring him of marriage, allegedly duped him of about Rs 1.5 crore within three months. The accused lured him with the promise of high returns from investment in the share market and got the money transferred into 30 different bank accounts. After realising he had been cheated, the victim lodged a complaint with the cyber police.
The victim, Deepak Kumar Jha, is a resident of Nawada village under the Baheda police station area of Darbhanga district. According to his complaint, about three months ago he became friends with a young woman on social media. She first developed the friendship and then held out the prospect of marriage and a better life together. During this period, she advised him to invest in the share market and assured him of high profits. Taken in by her, Deepak also sent money belonging to his mother and sister in the name of investment.
According to the victim, despite three months of conversation, the woman never made a video call and did not meet him face to face. Their conversations took place only through audio calls. When Deepak asked for his money back, the woman cited system maintenance and sought two to three days’ time. Later, she put a condition that he would have to pay an additional 25 percent of the total deposited amount to get the money back.
After this, the victim realised he had been cheated. He registered a complaint on the cyber helpline 1930 and lodged an FIR at the Darbhanga cyber police station on November 2. According to Cyber DSP Vipin Bihari, police are investigating the case. Verification of the suspected bank accounts and a technical probe to identify the accused are underway.
