Earth / Mars: NASA’s twin ESCAPADE spacecraft are preparing to pass Earth before heading for Mars, using the planet’s gravity and a carefully timed engine burn to begin the next leg of their journey.
The first powered flyby is planned for November 7 at about 3:30pm IST, followed by the second on November 9 at about 4:30pm IST. Those times are converted from NASA’s November 2 update, which gives 5am and 6am EST respectively. Each spacecraft is expected to fire its engine for roughly nine minutes near its closest approach.
The manoeuvres are still ahead, not completed milestones. If successful, they will set up a roughly ten-month cruise, with arrivals at Mars planned for September 7 and 9, 2027. The pair launched in November 2025 but did not travel directly to Mars; instead, they followed a looping route beyond Earth before returning for this departure opportunity.
At Mars, the question is what happens when the solar wind meets a planet whose magnetic environment differs sharply from Earth’s. ESCAPADE will examine how that interaction helps atmospheric material escape into space. Understanding the process could illuminate the planet’s climate history, rather than merely provide another set of pictures of its surface.
Two spacecraft give researchers a way to distinguish changes over time from differences between locations. In one observing campaign, the pair will follow similar paths, passing through the same regions at different times. In another, they will sample different parts of Mars’ magnetic environment simultaneously.
Arrival will not mean immediate full science operations. NASA’s mission plan includes orbit adjustments and a pause around solar conjunction, when communications become difficult, before the spacecraft reach their intended science orbits by mid-2028.
