CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the occasion of the closing of Diabetes Awareness Month, the Cyclothon was flagged off by Dr. Manish Sharma, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Bhopal, from the Jaiprakash District Hospital campus. Organized under the message “Every Pedal Counts,” the cycling rally provided information on the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of diabetes through placards, banners, and posters. The event received special support from the World Diabetes Foundation, Resolve to Save Lives, and Japaigo organizations.
On this occasion, Dr. Manish Sharma highlighted that regular exercise and physical activity are highly effective in preventing and controlling diabetes, particularly for patients with Type 2 diabetes. To prevent the pre-diabetic stage, consumption of high glycemic index foods such as potatoes, watermelon, pineapple, white sugar, rice, cornflakes, and white bread should be avoided.
A minimum of 40 minutes of exercise daily reduces the likelihood of developing diabetes. With regular check-ups, a healthy lifestyle, and adherence to prescribed medications, patients can lead a normal life. All government health institutions provide free diabetes and hypertension screening, consultation, and medications.
According to the World Health Organization and the World Diabetes Federation, over 537 million adults worldwide suffer from diabetes, and this number is projected to rise to 783 million by 2045. Diabetes affects people across all strata, but it is especially prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, which account for over 75% of diabetes cases globally.
