CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Every year, around 400 patients undergo brain tumor surgery at AIIMS Bhopal. In the context of World Brain Tumor Day, Ajay Singh, the director of AIIMS Bhopal, stated that early detection of this disease can lead to prompt treatment initiation, resulting in faster recovery for patients. Additionally, there is a need to dispel prevalent misconceptions in society so that by raising awareness, we can provide better support for patients in society. Looking at the cases occurring annually in the country, approximately 28,000 people fall prey to brain tumors each year.
Dr. Sumit Raj, Additional Doctor at the Neurosurgery Department of AIIMS Bhopal, explains that there are typically two types of tumors in the body: benign and malignant. If the cells in the tumor are normal, it is benign, but if the cells are abnormal and start to grow uncontrollably, they are cancerous cells. A brain tumor occurs when abnormal cells form in any part of the brain. Tumors can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Although no specific cause has been identified yet, doctors believe that prolonged exposure to radiation can lead to brain tumors.
When considering age, brain cancer in children is the second most common cause. Brain tumor treatment can be done through surgery. The purpose of observing World Brain Tumor Day is to raise awareness about brain tumors so that more people can understand this disease and recognize its early symptoms to seek timely treatment. The theme of this year’s World Brain Tumor Day is to understand brain health and learn about measures to prevent this disease.
