CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Excessive use of mobile phones and other screen devices among children and adolescents can affect their studies and academic performance. A review of recent research has found a negative association between screen time and children’s academic performance. All relevant reports included in one systematic review showed an adverse association between higher screen time and academic achievement. However, researchers also said that not every kind of screen use is harmful, and that the purpose and manner of use are important.

According to experts, prolonged use of mobile phones for entertainment can affect children’s study time, physical activity and sleep. A meta-analysis based on 48,490 participants found a small but consistent negative association between problematic smartphone use and academic achievement. This association was relatively stronger among primary and middle school students.

However, proper use of mobile phones can also support learning. A review on the use of mobile devices in classrooms for learning mathematics and language found some positive outcomes, but researchers advised caution in view of the limitations of the evidence.

It is therefore important to pay attention to the time, content and purpose of mobile use for children. Keeping unnecessary notifications switched off during study, taking regular breaks from screens, and setting aside time for sports and adequate sleep can be useful.
