CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. Rising pollution and changing weather in Delhi-NCR and several other areas are leading to complaints such as eye irritation, itching and dryness. In such situations, many people wonder whether they should wash their eyes repeatedly with water or use eye drops. According to experts, the correct answer depends on the cause of the problem.
Frequent rinsing with water is not always necessary. According to Dr Prarthana Anand, senior consultant, Eye Care, Metro Hospitals, if irritation is caused by dryness, lubricating eye drops, also called artificial tears, may be used on a doctor’s advice. These drops help maintain moisture in the eyes.
There is a natural tear film on the surface of the eyes, which helps keep them moist and protects them from external particles. Splashing water on the eyes repeatedly is not necessary in every situation. However, if dust or any foreign particle enters the eye, the eye may be washed gently with clean water.
Do not use any eye drop without medical advice. The same eye drop is not effective for every type of irritation. Allergies, infections and dry eye problems may require different treatments. Antibiotic or steroid eye drops should not be used without medical consultation. Repeated use of some drops that reduce redness in the eyes can also cause harm.
Do not ignore these symptoms: If there is severe eye pain, excessive redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light or sticky discharge, consult an eye specialist immediately. If a chemical enters the eye, start rinsing the eye continuously with clean water at once and seek emergency medical help.
Ways to keep the eyes healthy:
Avoid rubbing the eyes repeatedly.
Wear glasses while stepping out to protect the eyes from dust and pollution.
Take breaks at regular intervals while looking at screens for long periods.
Do not let the tip of an eye-drop bottle touch the eye or eyelids.
If the problem persists or worsens, get examined by a doctor instead of self-medicating.
Conclusion: In cases of mild irritation or dryness, lubricating eye drops may help if used on a doctor’s advice, while rinsing with water may be necessary if dust or chemicals enter the eye. Identifying the cause of the problem is the most important step for correct treatment.
