CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered the permanent cancellation of the licence of a government-aided residential school for tribal children in Gadchiroli after three girls died following a snakebite incident at the institution. The tragic incident has raised serious questions over student safety, basic facilities and the effectiveness of government inspections at residential schools.
The incident occurred at an ashram school in Japtalai village, where six girls were reportedly bitten by a venomous snake while sleeping on the hostel floor. Three students subsequently died, while other affected students were undergoing treatment. Reports also highlighted the absence of a warden at the time of the incident and deficiencies in basic facilities at the school.
Following a Cabinet briefing by Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike, Fadnavis directed officials to take strict action against those responsible. An official who had recently inspected the school and submitted a favourable report despite alleged deficiencies was also ordered to be suspended.
The Maharashtra government has further decided to conduct a third-party audit of more than 500 aided ashram schools across the state. The Chief Minister directed officials to strengthen inspection mechanisms, particularly in remote and interior areas, rather than focusing only on institutions located along major roads.
The government’s action is intended to establish accountability and improve safety standards for tribal students living in residential educational institutions. The incident has also intensified concerns over whether schools receiving government assistance are providing adequate accommodation, supervision, healthcare and emergency preparedness.
