CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: CNN Central News and Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News / Agencies: An example has emerged of moving away from traditional paddy farming and adopting horticulture and mixed farming. A farmer has given up paddy cultivation and developed a mango and guava orchard on 15 acres of land. Notably, the vacant land between the mango trees is being used to grow tomatoes and ginger. In addition, marigold flowers have been planted in the field as a method of pest control.
Under this farming method, the plan is to produce different crops from the same field. Tomatoes and ginger are being grown in the available space between the mango and guava trees. As a result, the orchard land is not limited only to fruit-bearing plants, and the empty spaces between them are also being used for cultivation.
The farmer has also made marigold plants part of the farming system for pest control. Planting marigold flowers in the field may help keep some pests away from the main crop. In this way, an effort has also been made to reduce dependence on chemical measures.
This orchard developed over 15 acres presents an alternative to traditional farming through crop diversification and mixed agriculture. Along with mango and guava, vegetables, spices and flowers are being cultivated, ensuring multiple use of the land.
