CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The first farmer-worker night mahapanchayat was organised under the leadership of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. A large number of farmers from Muzaffarnagar and nearby districts reached the Government Inter College ground in the city for the gathering. Several BKU office-bearers, including farmer leaders Rakesh Tikait and Naresh Tikait, were present at the programme.
Several key issues related to farmers were raised at the mahapanchayat. These included a fair price for sugarcane, electricity problems, an MSP guarantee law, land circle rates, and the problems of potato and wheat farmers. Raising the demand for an increase in sugarcane prices, Rakesh Tikait said the government should take farmers’ demands seriously. He also demanded that the sugarcane price be fixed at around Rs 500 to Rs 600 per quintal.
Rakesh Tikait said farmers’ struggle could be fought not only during the day but also at night. According to him, the objective of the night mahapanchayat was also to prepare farmers and workers organisationally. A cultural programme was also held during the event. He said such meetings would be organised in different districts in the coming time.
In view of the mahapanchayat, the police and administration made special arrangements for security and traffic. Due to the rise in the number of farmers’ vehicles, traffic jams were also reported on some major routes in the city.
