King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first woman prime minister. She has been given the responsibility of forming the new government.
With this, she has become the second woman in the Arab world to hold the post of prime minister. Before her, Tunisia’s Najla Bouden had held the position.
Fatima Mansouri is 50 years old and has been a lawyer by profession. She studied law at the University of Montpellier in France and also pursued law-related education in the United States. In 2008, she joined the Authenticity and Modernity Party, and the following year became the first woman mayor of Marrakech. In 2021, she was elected mayor of Marrakech for a second time.
Her influence in national politics also continued to grow. In 2021, she was given charge of the Ministry of National Territorial Planning, Urban Development, Housing and Urban Policy. During this period, housing assistance, urban development and the rehabilitation of people affected by the Al Haouz earthquake were among the key areas of work for her ministry.
Her party has won 97 of the 395 seats in the recent parliamentary election. However, a majority of 198 seats is required to form the government. In this situation, Mansouri’s first major responsibility as prime minister will be to build a coalition.
Her government will also face challenges including employment, inflation, increasing incomes and taking forward major development works linked to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
