CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Romanian tennis player Filip Cristian Jianu scored an impressive victory in the first round of the Tiriac Open, defeating American Nishesh Basavareddy 6-3, 6-4.

The 23-year-old wildcard entrant, ranked No. 241 in the ATP rankings, overcame the 108th-ranked Basavareddy in just 93 minutes. While the American hit more winners (22-13), he also committed more unforced errors (16-9), which ultimately gave Jianu the edge.

With this win, Jianu earned €10,460 (approx. $11,317 USD) in prize money and 25 ATP points. He will now face either Valentin Vacherot or Damir Dzumhur in the pre-quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, another Romanian player, Luca Preda, exited the tournament after a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Valentin Vacherot in the first round. Preda received €3,200 (approx. $3,462 USD) and 7 ATP points.

The Tiriac Open, an ATP 250 clay court tournament, is being held at the National Tennis Centre in Bucharest from March 31 to April 6.
