CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: In the Indian film industry, film earnings are no longer limited to cinemas. Film exhibition rights on digital streaming platforms, or OTT rights, have also become a major part of the business. OTT companies are spending crores of rupees to acquire the digital rights of big films. In this context, the Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash-starrer ‘Ramayana’ has reportedly drawn attention with a digital and satellite rights deal worth Rs 450 crore. However, there has been no independent official confirmation of this amount from the makers.
‘Ramayana’ and its Rs 450 crore deal: The first part of director Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana’ is scheduled to release in cinemas on November 5, 2026. According to reports, the film’s digital and satellite rights are included in a deal of about Rs 450 crore linked to JioHotstar and Star Group. In the film, Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi plays Mata Sita and Yash plays Ravana.
Digital rights of these films also sold for crores: The major digital rights deals cited in reports are as follows:
– ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ – about Rs 375 crore.
– ‘RRR’ – about Rs 325 to 330 crore.
– ‘KGF Chapter 2’ – about Rs 320 crore.
– ‘Pushpa 2: The Rule’ – about Rs 275 crore.
– ‘Jawan’ – about Rs 250 crore.
– ‘Adipurush’ – about Rs 200 crore.
– ‘Salaar’ – about Rs 160 crore.
– ‘Devara: Part 1’ – about Rs 150 to 155 crore.
It is important to understand the difference in deal amounts: While comparing the rights of these films, it is important to note that all figures are not in the same category. Some film figures relate only to digital streaming rights, while the reported Rs 450 crore deal for ‘Ramayana’ includes both digital and satellite rights. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to treat these amounts as directly equivalent to one another.
Growing competition in the OTT market: For big-budget films, the sale of digital rights gives producers an opportunity to raise a large amount even before release. At the same time, streaming platforms are investing to bring films with popular stars, big budgets and reach among audiences in different languages to their platforms. As a result, the role of OTT rights in the film production and distribution business is becoming increasingly important.
