Smoke from fireworks and firecrackers on Diwali not only increases air pollution but can also harm eye health. Fine particles, chemical residues and toxic gases released by firecrackers can affect the outer surface of the eyes. This may cause problems such as burning, itching, redness, watering and dryness. Symptoms can worsen in people already suffering from dry eye or allergies.

According to Prof. Dr. Mahipal Singh Sachdev, chairman of the Centre for Sight group of hospitals, direct exposure to firecracker smoke during Diwali should be avoided. If smoke enters the eyes, they should be washed gently with clean water. Avoid rubbing the eyes repeatedly, as this can increase irritation and discomfort.

Doctors have also advised caution in the use of makeup and contact lenses during the festival. Do not share makeup products with others and remove eye makeup properly before going to sleep. It is important to follow instructions related to the cleaning and use of contact lenses. Do not use eye drops or any home remedy without medical advice.

Maintain a safe distance while lighting firecrackers and do not allow children to use fireworks alone. In case of severe eye pain, persistent redness, injury or blurred vision, contact an eye specialist immediately. Sparks or explosions from firecrackers can cause serious eye injuries, creating a risk of permanent damage to vision.
