CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) has achieved yet another significant milestone in the field of medicine. BMHRC successfully conducted its first-ever eye transplant. A 50-year-old gas tragedy survivor from Raisen district received a corneal transplant at the hospital. The procedure was carried out successfully by a team of expert ophthalmologists from the Department of Ophthalmology at BMHRC.

The patient had lost vision in one eye 15 years ago due to an injury, while the vision in the other eye was severely impaired due to cataract. To restore his sight, the cornea donated by the late Mrs. Asha Sharma was used. She had pledged her eyes at a private hospital in Bhopal. Her cornea was brought to BMHRC on Sunday, and the transplant procedure was successfully completed on Tuesday. Currently, the patient is reported to be in stable and healthy condition.

The team of specialists who performed this critical medical achievement included Dr. Hemlata Yadav, Head of the Ophthalmology Department, Professor Anjali Sharma, visiting consultant Dr. Prateek Gurjar, and other medical experts.

Expressing her delight over this achievement, Dr. Manisha Srivastava, Acting Director of BMHRC, said, “We had been working for a long time to initiate eye transplant services, and this is a major accomplishment for us. We aim to introduce other organ transplant facilities at BMHRC in the near future as well.”
