CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. It is generally believed that healthy and fit women in the 30 – 40 age group have a lower risk of heart attack. However, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, or SCAD, is a condition in which a heart attack can occur even without traditional risk factors. According to experts, in this condition, a sudden tear in the wall of a coronary artery, or blood collecting between its layers, can narrow the artery and obstruct blood flow.
Most cases of SCAD are seen in women. Experts say it can be an important cause of heart attack in young women. The condition can occur even when common risk factors such as high cholesterol, diabetes or smoking are absent.
Experts have also cited possible links with pregnancy, hormonal changes, intense physical exertion, lifting heavy weights and severe emotional stress. A blood vessel-related condition such as fibromuscular dysplasia has also been found to be associated with SCAD. However, a definite cause is not clear in every case.
Signs of a heart attack may include chest pressure or pain, as well as shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, weakness, pain in the back or arm, and nausea. In women, these symptoms can sometimes appear even without obvious chest pain. If such symptoms occur suddenly, it is essential to seek emergency medical help immediately.
