CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A devastating flash flood struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction along the Bhotekoshi River and leaving several people missing. The sudden surge of water swept through settlements, damaged roads and bridges, and affected critical infrastructure near the Nepal-Tibet border. Rescue and relief operations are underway as authorities work to assess the full extent of the disaster.
The flood has severely affected areas around the Nepal-China border, with homes, vehicles, roads and hydropower facilities reportedly damaged or washed away. Authorities have warned residents in vulnerable areas to move to safer locations as concerns remain over the possibility of another flood wave.
According to reports, hundreds of travellers and tourists are currently unaccounted for. Nepal’s tourism authorities have reported 384 people missing, including 291 foreign nationals and 105 Indian citizens. Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate those affected and bring stranded people to safety.
The disaster has also affected security personnel and government installations in the Rasuwa region. Rescue operations are being carried out by Nepal’s security forces, but damaged roads, bridges and difficult mountainous terrain are making access to affected areas extremely challenging.
Initial assessments indicate that the flooding may have been triggered by an ice-rock avalanche or related geological event rather than ordinary rainfall. The sudden release of water caused the Bhotekoshi River and connected waterways to rise rapidly, resulting in severe destruction downstream.
Authorities remain on high alert across several districts while rescue teams continue searching for missing people. The disaster has highlighted the vulnerability of Himalayan communities and infrastructure to sudden floods and other extreme natural events, reinforcing the need for stronger early-warning systems, disaster preparedness and coordinated cross-border response mechanisms.
