CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Lucknow. Conditions remain challenging in several parts of Uttar Pradesh due to rain and flooding. Low-lying areas in and around Lucknow are waterlogged. In the state capital, thousands of homes have been affected after the water level of the Gomti river rose.
An incident was also reported from the Itaunja area, where seven friends were swept away in floodwater. Nineteen-year-old Vimal Kumar died, while six others managed to come out safely. According to police, seven youths in Lasa village of Itaunja were returning through floodwater when one of them was swept away by the strong current. As the others tried to rescue him, they too were caught in the water. Six youths somehow came out, but Vimal Kumar was swept away by the current. A rescue team later recovered his body.
In Lucknow, the rising water level of the Gomti river has caused waterlogging in several low-lying localities, including Faizullaganj, Madiyanv, Ghaila and Gomti Nagar Extension. According to reports, around 40,000 homes in the city have been affected by flooding. Excessive rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Gomti in the last week of September is also being cited as a major reason behind the situation.
The weather department has issued a warning for thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in eastern and western parts of Uttar Pradesh on October 7. Thunderstorms and lightning are also likely in Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. Rain and thunderstorm activity is expected to continue in several other states, including eastern Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.
