CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Former air force officer tied to Hasina’s Dhaka departure video dies, family suspects murder
Dhaka. Former air force officer KM Tahsif Suri, who came into focus after a video emerged of former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country on August 5, 2024, has died in suspicious circumstances. The body of the 28-year-old former flight lieutenant was found in Dhaka’s Turag river on October 28. He had been missing since the previous day. After his death, political and security-related questions in Bangladesh have returned to discussion.
Body found in river, post-mortem report awaited. According to police, Suri’s body was recovered from the river near Rajabari Ghat in Dhaka’s Uttara area. He was identified with the help of an iPhone found in his pocket. The body was sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. Initial investigation found no clear injury marks on the body, though reports said there was bleeding from the nose. Officials said the actual cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem report.
Family alleges murder. Suri’s cousin Moshfeka Jahan, in a social media post, expressed suspicion that he had been murdered. She claimed Suri faced continuous mental harassment and surveillance after sharing the video of Sheikh Hasina leaving the country. She also said Suri had not recorded the video himself, but had shared a video made by a colleague. However, these allegations by the family have not been independently confirmed.
Hint made in podcast as well. During a podcast in July 2026, Suri was asked whether he had lost his air force job because he recorded the video of Hasina’s departure. He did not directly confirm it, but replied, “Maybe.” He had also questioned what evidence there was against him for recording or sharing the video. Different claims have also emerged regarding Suri’s retirement from the air force. The Directorate of Military Public Relations had earlier said his service termination took place under prescribed rules and procedure.
Truth to emerge only after investigation. Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the matter can be commented on only after the initial investigation and post-mortem. For now, police have not confirmed the cause of death. It is also not clear whether his death had any connection with the controversy over the video linked to Hasina.
