CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Amid the continuing controversy over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, former Election Commissioner OP Rawat has responded to the issue. Describing the current situation as unfortunate, he said the creation of a sense of fear among voters over SIR is not a healthy situation for democracy.
Speaking to news agency PTI, OP Rawat said that during his tenure in the Election Commission, decisions were usually taken unanimously. Even in the event of differences, efforts were made to build consensus in order to maintain institutional unity. He said there is concern that the current controversy could affect public trust.
In his remarks on SIR, Rawat said the process has created a situation in which many voters are feeling worried. He described the questions being raised about the functioning of the Election Commission and its decisions as important for democratic institutions.
He also referred to the allegations linked to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and said that a situation in which differences within the Election Commission become public is unfortunate for democracy. Rawat also said that if any Election Commissioner has an objection to any decision or process, he can put forward his views publicly.
Amid the continuing debate between political parties and the Election Commission over SIR, OP Rawat’s comments have brought the issue of transparency in the election process and institutional trust back into discussion.
