CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju has made sharp remarks against leaders of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). He questioned Abhijeet Deepke, Saurav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde for signing peace bonds, or bonds related to maintaining peace. In a social media post, Katju claimed the decision had damaged the public credibility of all four leaders. He alleged that people would now see them as leaders afraid of going to jail.
‘Signing peace bonds ends careers’
In his post, Katju described the four leaders as the “Gang of Four”. He said that after signing peace bonds, if these leaders join any public demonstration again, police could treat it as a violation of the bond conditions. Katju called this harmful to the leaders’ political future and public image. He also praised student leader Neha Bora in the matter. According to Katju, Neha refused to sign a peace bond and described peaceful protest as her constitutional right. These remarks are Katju’s personal opinion, not the finding of any court.
What is the case involving CJP leaders?
CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained in Delhi during a protest at Jantar Mantar for allegedly crossing barricades and violating restrictions. Police had accused them of breaching rules related to law and order. They were later sent to judicial custody.
On October 21, the Special Executive Magistrate ordered their release after accepting written assurances and bonds related to maintaining peace. They gave assurances that they would not call for a protest at Jantar Mantar until it was notified as a protest site, and that they would follow constitutional limits in future protests.
Political and legal debate intensifies
After Katju’s remarks, debate has intensified over the conditions of peace bonds, the right to protest and the political strategy of leaders. While critics are linking the matter to the leaders’ public image, supporters of peaceful protest are stressing the importance of constitutional rights and legal process.
