CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, witnessed violent clashes last Friday during a pro-monarchy demonstration. However, former King Gyanendra Shah’s secretariat has denied any responsibility for the incident. In a statement released on Thursday, the secretariat blamed the government’s shortcomings and weaknesses for the tragic event.
Phaniraj Pathak, the communication secretary of the secretariat, stated that Nirmal Niwas (the former royal residence) and King Gyanendra’s supporters would not take responsibility for the violence, vandalism, and looting that occurred during the protests. He alleged that the Oli government is trying to cover up its failures by holding the former king responsible for the arson, rioting, and deaths of two individuals in the Tinkune area on March 28. Prime Minister Oli, in his parliamentary address, directly blamed the former monarch for the incident and warned of possible legal action against him.
Notably, the protest was organized by the United People’s Struggle Committee, led by 87-year-old Navaraj Subedi, a staunch supporter of former King Gyanendra Shah. Subedi had previously claimed that the former king himself had asked him to lead the committee. Following Friday’s violent events, Subedi has been placed under house arrest.
