CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Political activity has intensified ahead of the bypoll for Assam’s Nagaon Lok Sabha seat. Former Nagaon Deputy Commissioner and senior administrative officer Debashish Sharma has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He took party membership on Tuesday. His move has come about a month before the bypoll, triggering fresh discussions in Assam politics.
Debashish Sharma had recently taken voluntary retirement after serving in government for nearly 34 years. After his entry into the BJP, speculation has begun that he may contest the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll. However, Sharma has for now denied any discussion about a ticket and said he has joined the party as a worker. The BJP has also not made any official announcement on his candidature.
The Congress has raised questions over Sharma joining the BJP. Congress leaders have sought the Election Commission’s intervention, questioning the impartiality of his recent administrative tenure and electoral role. The party has also demanded an independent inquiry into alleged financial irregularities linked to his tenure. The Congress says an investigation into the entire matter is necessary to ensure the fairness of the bypoll.
Voting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll will be held on October 6, and counting of votes will take place on October 9.
