CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was arrested on Monday, October 26, 2026, by the Chennai Police Central Crime Branch (CCB) in connection with an alleged ₹100-crore scam involving private school approvals. The arrest followed the Madras High Court’s rejection of his anticipatory bail petition.

The case centres on allegations that money was collected from private school managements in exchange for government approvals, including permanent recognition, school upgradation and other statutory clearances. Investigators have linked approximately 177 private schools to the alleged collection of funds. According to the complaint, payments were reportedly sought under the guise of party funds, with assurances that pending applications would be cleared.

The investigation initially focused on individuals associated with the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association. Police subsequently expanded the inquiry to examine the alleged role of the former minister. The Central Crime Branch has invoked provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, while the Enforcement Directorate has also registered a case to investigate the suspected financial transactions.

Anbil Mahesh has denied the allegations and described the investigation as politically motivated. The DMK has also accused the ruling TVK government of targeting political opponents through investigative agencies. These remain contested claims, and the allegations against the former minister have yet to be established in court.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining the alleged collection of funds and the process through which private schools obtained regulatory approvals.
