CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tonk. A special Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe court in Rajasthan’s Tonk district has sentenced four members of the same family to life imprisonment in the murder case of 25-year-old Suman. The convicts include Suman’s lover Pradhan, his mother Sanjana, brother Sawai Ram and sister Sushila. The court also imposed a total fine of Rs 1.35 lakh on the four.
According to the prosecution, Suman and Pradhan were in a relationship and belonged to different castes. Suman wanted to marry him, after which, in 2022, Pradhan allegedly conspired with his mother, brother and sister to kill her. Suman was called to the village on the pretext of a shraddh ceremony and was allegedly made to drink a poisonous chemical.
After the killing, relatives were told that Suman had died of a snakebite. However, the post-mortem and viscera examination later revealed the presence of a poisonous substance. During the investigation, police also found that Pradhan had withdrawn about Rs 80,000 using Suman’s ATM card. A complaint in the case was registered in May 2023.
Special Judge Aarti Maheshwari delivered the verdict on the basis of statements from 27 witnesses and 37 documents. During the judgment, the judge also included a 10-line poem written by her, conveying a message of justice in the context of murder, betrayal and caste differences.
