The experiment was part of preparations for sending humans to Mars in the future. The four members stepped out of a special habitat built at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston on October 31 and met their families and scientists.

The mission was named Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA). It included mission commander Ross Elder, medical officer Ellen Ellis, science officer Matthew Montgomery and flight engineer James Spicer. The four had entered the nearly 158-square-metre 3D-printed habitat on October 19, 2025.

During this period, they lived in conditions similar to those on Mars. Their routine included living with limited resources, growing crops in artificial Martian soil, maintaining the habitat and practising activities linked to space missions. Communication with Earth was also delayed so that the real challenges of interplanetary communication could be experienced. Through this experiment, NASA wants to understand how astronauts can remain physically and mentally healthy during long-duration space missions. After completing the mission, the four members will undergo medical and scientific evaluation for two weeks. The study is expected to help preparations for future Moon and Mars missions.
