CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. Four workers were killed and two others seriously injured after a major fire broke out at a shoe manufacturing factory in Delhi’s Mangolpuri industrial area on Friday night. The incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. in a factory located in Phase 1. After receiving information about the fire, fire department and police teams reached the spot and began relief and rescue operations.

According to the fire department, the fire first broke out in the factory’s basement, where shoes were manufactured and stored. Thick smoke rising from the basement spread to the upper floors, making it difficult for workers present there to get out. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after several hours of effort. During the rescue operation, six people were pulled out in an unconscious state and taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. Doctors there declared four of them dead, while treatment of two injured people is continuing.

Fire officer Paras Kumar said that due to the smoke, one person was rescued from the staircase on the third floor and five others from the fourth floor. Firefighters succeeded in keeping the blaze confined to the basement. The cooling process at the spot was also completed thereafter.

Outer District Deputy Commissioner of Police Vikram Singh said the cause of the fire is being investigated. Police called the factory owner for questioning and also gathered information from the contractor and employees. An FIR has been registered in the case under sections related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Police are also trying to determine how many workers were present in the factory at the time of the incident and whether safety norms were being followed.
