CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: At the District Hospital, Jaiprakash, for the first time, FibroScan technology was used to screen for fatty liver disease. These individuals had been identified by field health workers under the Healthy Liver Mission.
A total of 200 people were tested using the FibroScan machine. Among them, 147 were found to have fatty liver, and 28 were diagnosed with liver fibrosis. Along with treatment, patients were advised on maintaining a healthy liver, including consuming nutritious home-based foods and avoiding alcohol and smoking. Regular follow-ups will be conducted for these patients.

The FibroScan machine uses transient liver elastography technology for testing. It is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that evaluates conditions like fatty liver and liver fibrosis, providing a score-based assessment.
The Healthy Liver Mission was launched across Madhya Pradesh, including Bhopal, in June this year to raise awareness about liver diseases, enable early detection, provide treatment, and support prevention. Community screening was conducted for citizens aged 30 years and above. Screening for suspected NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) was based on criteria such as BMI over 23, waist measurement above 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men, and a history of diabetes.
Dr. Manish Sharma, Chief Medical and Health Officer, Bhopal, explained that the liver can be affected by various conditions, including fatty liver, liver fibrosis, hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Liver fibrosis can be assessed using a transient elastography scan, which is conducted based on the FIB-4 score derived from platelet count, SGOT (AST), and SGPT (ALT) test results, followed by medical consultation.
