CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: If you have a recurring cough along with a sore throat, difficulty breathing or tightness in the chest, one possible reason could be air pollution. Dust, smoke and very fine particles such as PM 2.5 present in the air can affect the respiratory system. However, frequent coughing does not necessarily mean that a person has been affected by pollution alone. Conditions such as infection, allergy, asthma and acid reflux may also be behind it.

Why does pollution increase coughing?

Vehicle smoke, dust from construction sites, industrial emissions and other sources of smoke can worsen air quality. Exposure to polluted air can irritate the throat and airways, increasing problems such as coughing, wheezing and breathlessness. Its impact may be greater on people suffering from asthma or chronic lung disease.

Which symptoms should be watched? If coughing increases when pollution levels rise, if there is irritation in the throat after going outdoors, or if breathing becomes difficult, air pollution may be a possible reason. But the exact cause cannot be determined on the basis of symptoms alone. If a cough persists for a long time, medical examination may be necessary.

To protect against air pollution, the first step is to keep track of the Air Quality Index (AQI) and plan outdoor activities accordingly. When pollution levels are high, avoid exercising outdoors and staying in the open for long periods. If going outside is necessary, wearing a well-fitting N95 mask may help. It is also important to maintain clean air indoors. For this, limit smoking, incense sticks and other sources that produce smoke. In addition, drink water regularly to maintain adequate hydration in the body. If coughing, breathing difficulty or other symptoms appear due to pollution, consult a doctor. Do not take antibiotics or cough medicines without medical advice.

When should a doctor be contacted? If the cough persists, is getting worse, or is accompanied by fever, wheezing or breathlessness, consult a doctor. Seek immediate medical help in cases of coughing up blood, severe breathing difficulty or sharp chest pain.
