CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: On the occasion of World Kidney Day, a seminar on “Future of Kidney Transplant” was organized today at AIIMS Bhopal. Inaugurating the seminar, Prof. (Dr) Ajai Singh, Executive Director, AIIMS Bhopal said that there are many misconceptions and misunderstandings regarding organ donation in our country which are also linked to many religious beliefs. To overcome these, there is a need to create awareness in the society. Prof Singh further added that programs should be run in schools because when we make children aware, an entire generation will become aware. Due to this, these misconceptions and misunderstandings will not exist in the coming days. We will also have to make efforts to prevent kidney disease. Changes in lifestyle will have to be made so that there is no need for transplant. Today, about 2 lakh people in the country require kidney transplant every year.
Head of the Department of Urology, Dr Devashish Kaushal said that kidney transplant has started in AIIMS but there is still a long way to go. The kidney transplant setup at AIIMS Bhopal is the largest among all the AIIMS institutes in the country. Today organ donation of brain dead people is the need of the hour. Dr. Rakesh Bhargava, Secretary of the NGO Kiran Foundation, said that one donor can give life to eight people. Every year about 5 lakh people in India need various organ donations. His organization will work with AIIMS Bhopal to promote organ donation. Apart from this, Mr. Nilesh Mandlewala, founder of Donate Life NGO, spoke on the topic of how to motivate the society for organ donation of brain dead people, while Prof. (Dr) Syed Jamal Rizvi, of Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, discussed about the process of organ donation of brain dead people.
