CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has expressed strong displeasure over the continuing delay in the construction and widening of the Mumbai-Goa Highway. He said he feels embarrassed that the project has been delayed for so long and, for this reason, has decided not to attend the highway’s inauguration ceremony.
Gadkari said that during a meeting with officials, he was informed that around 93-94 percent of the work on the Mumbai-Goa Highway has been completed. He said he will travel by road from Mumbai airport to Goa in October and personally inspect the status of the highway work. Efforts have been under way for several years to complete the nearly 555-kilometre corridor, but its deadlines have kept being extended because of issues related to land acquisition, clearances and contractors.
Gadkari also warned of strict action against contractors and officials responsible for delays and poor quality in projects. He said his ministry wants to set a record for blacklisting the maximum number of contractors and suspending officials in one year.
