CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Get kidney tests once a year for timely disease detection
The kidneys play an important role in removing waste substances and excess water from our body, while maintaining the balance of minerals in the blood. However, chronic kidney-related diseases often progress in the early stages without clear symptoms. In such a situation, regular health check-ups can help detect the disease in time and slow its progression.
Which tests are important? To assess kidney function, doctors may mainly advise two types of tests. Serum creatinine and eGFR test: Based on the level of creatinine in the blood, eGFR indicates how well the kidneys are filtering the blood. Urine albumin test: This checks for a protein called albumin in the urine. An abnormal amount may be a sign of kidney damage. Looking at the results of both tests together can provide a better assessment of kidney health. If needed, doctors may also prescribe other tests.
Who should be more alert? The risk may increase in people with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or a family history of kidney disease. Older age, obesity, smoking, repeated kidney stones or long-term use of certain medicines that affect the kidneys may also be linked to risk. According to experts, people with diabetes should generally get their kidneys checked every year. For people with high blood pressure and other risk factors, doctors can decide how often testing is needed based on their condition.
Do not wait for symptoms. Swelling in the feet or ankles, foamy urine, changes in the amount or frequency of urination, persistent fatigue, reduced appetite and shortness of breath may be seen in kidney disease. However, these symptoms can have other causes, and early kidney disease may show no symptoms at all. Therefore, it is not correct to judge kidney health only on the basis of symptoms. Periodic testing and medical advice can help identify the disease early. If a report is abnormal, it is important to seek medical evaluation instead of panicking. Note: Not everyone needs kidney tests at the same interval. Decide the right time for testing with a doctor, based on age, health and risk.
