CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The impact of the devastating flash floods in Nepal is now being seen as far as Bihar’s Gandak river. With the strong flood current, a large number of fish from Nepal’s rivers and reservoirs have reached Bihar. Claims are being made that some of these fish weigh from 90 kg to one-and-a-half quintals. Videos of the giant fish are going viral on social media.
Fishermen are catching large fish at Mangalpur Ghat in Gopalganj, Valmikinagar, Bagaha and surrounding areas. In several places, people are also gathering to see the giant fish. Some fish have also been found dead in the fast-flowing water.
According to reports, floodwater in Nepal reached the Narayani river system through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers. After entering India, the same river flows as the Gandak. Due to the strong current, fish from Nepal’s hilly areas and reservoirs were also swept along with the water to Bihar.
At the local level, large fish of various species such as goonch catfish, Baghar, grass carp, Barali and Rohu are reported to have been found. Some videos on social media show fish weighing around 100 kg or more. However, the species and actual weight of the fish in all viral claims have not been independently confirmed.
While the floods in Nepal have caused large-scale devastation, this unusual arrival of fish around the Gandak river in Bihar has become a matter of curiosity for local people. It will also be important for experts and the local administration to examine the species and condition of these fish.
