CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A dangerous chain of events that began with a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region has emerged behind the devastating flood that struck Nepal on August 26. A large section of glacier broke away and fell from a high-altitude area, after which a huge flow of ice, rock and debris entered the river system. Within moments, the debris and water turned into a fast-moving, destructive flood.

According to reports, after the glacier collapse, debris of ice and rocks fell into the Lehende Khola river. Its volume kept increasing after mixing with the water and debris already present there. The flow then moved towards the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems, causing heavy destruction in several areas along its path. According to experts, the river level rose by several metres in a very short time at some places.

One report has claimed that after the glacier collapse, the flood covered a distance of about 20 kilometres in just seven minutes, putting its estimated speed at around 180 kilometres per hour. Because the mixture of water, ice, rock and soil came down at such high speed, people had very little time to react and reach safe locations.

The disaster has caused heavy damage to roads, bridges, houses and energy projects in areas around the Nepal-China border. Relief and rescue operations are continuing, and thousands of security personnel have been deployed in the affected areas.

Scientists say the Himalayas are changing rapidly. Rising temperatures, retreating glaciers, and the instability of ice and rocks in high-altitude areas could increase the risk of glacier-related disasters. However, detailed scientific investigation is necessary before directly describing any one event as a result of climate change.

This tragedy in Nepal once again shows how important it is in Himalayan regions to monitor glaciers and potential flood sources, strengthen early warning systems, and ensure timely evacuation arrangements.
